Captains, newcomers set the tone for the early track season

The boys and girls track team started their competitive season this past Saturday at the John Sanders Invitational, followed by a dual meet Monday with Parma Senior High School.  This is the start of one of the most brutal stretches of the season with four races in eight days.  The team has started off strong, on the backs of the strong performances of its captains.

Junior throws captain Nicole Sabol took first in discus and second in the shot put at the John Sanders Invite, and followed up that effort by winning both events against Parma.

Senior distance captain Jake Darby finished third overall in the 1600m on Saturday, and then helped the boys team against Parma by winning the 1600m, 3200m, and anchoring the winning 4×800 m relay along with team members Nick Schuler, Luke Fulop, and Simon DeVito.

Junior captains Sarah Sparks and Bryce Lane have each finished first in the long jump, with Sarah winning the John Sanders Invitational on Saturday, and Bryce starting his season Monday with a win against Parma.  Sarah also took fourth overall on Saturday in the 400m, and also helped Monday to win both the 4 x 200m and 4 x 400m relays.

There is also plenty to be excited about when looking at the future of the team.  First year team members freshman Adam Rini and sophomore Liam McCormick have made the high jump a great strength for the boys team.  Adam took 1st place overall at the John Sanders Invite, followed by a 2nd place overall against Parma, in which Liam took the 1st place spot.

On the girls team, freshman Kate Reardon has been a standout on both the 4 x 800m and 4 x 400m relays.  She finished fourth overall in the 800m on Saturday, following that up by taking 1st on Monday.

Junior Hailey Lawler is currently undefeated in the 100m high hurdles, winning the event at both meets so far.  She also took 3rd overall in the 300m low hurdles on Saturday, and won the event against Parma.

Both boys and girls teams travel to Bay High School on Wednesday, and attend the Bill Dodd Invitational on Saturday.
